Vummidi Ethiraj, craftsman behind historic Sengol, dies at 99

Vummidi Ethiraj, the Chennai jeweller who helped craft the historic sengol presented to Jawaharlal Nehru in 1947, died on October 21 at the age of 99. President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Tamil Nadu governor paid tribute to his role in creating the symbol of India’s transfer of power, installed in the new Parliament in 2023.
